Pope's Class I Adventure

Pope's Class I Adventure

Enjoy the Ocmulgee as it transitions into the larger Coastal Plain form it assumes for the rest of its course from Macon on to its confluence with the Oconee to form the mighty Altamaha. The last notable shoals on the river will keep you on your toes as you travel the 10 miles of river from Popes Ferry in Monroe Co to the national award-winning Amerson River Park in Macon on this full day guided tour.

Explore Zellner Island and Historic Dames Ferry

The paddle starts off with a roughly 3/4 mile exploration of a narrow channel that separates Zellner Island from the right bank of the river, before joining the main channel of the Ocmulgee. Small shoals break up the flat water mileage, and unique river cabins and full time residences dot the banks. The mouth of Falling Creek, about 3 miles above the take out, makes for a particularly good spot to cool off on hot days. Once back on the water from there, you’ll shortly find yourself at the historic Dames Ferry, where OOE has access to a privately owned paddle-in campground that’s currently being developed. The shoals just below the Hwy 18 bridge will get the adrenaline pumping one last time before the final mellow 2 miles to Popes, where your vehicle awaits.

Don’t forget to ask us how we can turn this into a multi-day option by camping at Dames Ferry, with a short morning paddle to Popes on day two, or go all the way to Amerson River Park for a second full day of adventure!
